What is a lightning protection system?

Lightning protection systems are the modern development of Benjamin Franklin's lightning rod. Many people believe lightning rods attract lightning. In fact, a lightning protection system directs harmful electrical currents away from a structure and safely to ground.

Protection acts as a safeguard designed to intercept the extremely high currents of a strike and pass them from the structure to the ground via a network of air terminals, conductors and ground electrodes. We install a wide range of products to divert the strike away from your buildings and the equipment they contain.

The three parts of a compliant system

Air terminals

Strike termination points positioned across the roof, plant and high points so a strike attaches where you intend it to, not to the structure or services.

Down conductors

Low impedance paths routed down the structure, bonded to metallic services, carrying the current to earth without side flashing into the building.

Ground electrodes

An earthing network sized for the soil conditions on site, dissipating the energy into the ground and tested for resistance at certification.

Does our building need lightning protection?

AS/NZS 1768 sets out a risk assessment based on the building's height, location, exposure, construction, occupancy and the consequence of damage. High rise residential and commercial towers, buildings with rooftop plant, heritage structures, churches, warehouses and sites holding critical or sensitive equipment are the most common candidates. We carry out the assessment and tell you plainly whether a system is warranted.

How does a lightning protection system work?

A lightning protection system does not attract lightning. It intercepts an extremely high current strike and passes it safely from the structure to ground through a network of air terminals, down conductors and ground electrodes, keeping the energy out of the building structure, contents and occupants.

Does a lightning protection system also protect lifts, comms and building services?

Not on its own. A direct strike system protects the structure. Protecting sensitive equipment such as lift controllers, BMS, comms and access control also requires coordinated surge protection devices at the main switchboard and distribution boards.

Our building has no lightning protection. Do we need it?

It depends on the building's height, location, exposure, occupancy and the value or sensitivity of what is inside. We carry out a risk assessment in line with AS/NZS 1768 and advise whether a system is warranted, and what a compliant design would look like.

Can you upgrade or repair an existing system rather than replace it?

In most cases yes. Deteriorated conductors, corroded joints and inadequate bonding can usually be repaired in place. Full redesign is only needed where the structure has changed significantly or the original installation no longer meets the current standard.
