A surge is a transient electrical fluctuation that can cause serious damage to electronic and electro-mechanical equipment. We select and install surge protection devices to suit your environment, their location within the structure, and the sensitivity of the equipment being protected.

What is the difference between Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 SPDs?

Type 1

Used in conjunction with a lightning protection system at the main incoming point, where the highest energy partial lightning currents arrive.

Type 2

Installed in distribution boards and coordinated with Type 1 devices to protect against the failure of sensitive equipment downstream.

Type 3

Installed as a supplement to Type 2. These have a low discharge capacity and sit close to sensitive equipment. Connecting conductors are kept as short as possible for maximum protection.

What surge protection saves in a building

A direct strike system protects the structure. It does not, on its own, protect the equipment inside. Lift controllers, building management systems, access control, comms racks, fire panels, pumps and metering are all vulnerable to transients that arrive through the mains or from a nearby strike. Coordinated SPDs are the difference between a storm being an inconvenience and a storm being a capital replacement.

Does a lightning protection system also protect lifts, comms and building services?

Not on its own. A direct strike system protects the structure. Protecting sensitive equipment such as lift controllers, BMS, comms and access control also requires coordinated surge protection devices at the main switchboard and distribution boards.

What is the difference between Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 surge protection?

Type 1 SPDs are used in conjunction with a lightning protection system at the main incoming point. Type 2 devices are installed in distribution boards and coordinate with Type 1 to protect against equipment failure. Type 3 devices supplement Type 2 with a low discharge capacity and are installed close to sensitive equipment.
